My latest post is up at Free Software Magazine. It discusses whether the lack of commodity hardware will kill free software on mobile platforms.
From the article:
"Mobile hardware is in a [poor] state. Practically every device is a black box which comes from a single manufacturer. Be that HTC, Apple, Nokia, Sony/Ericsson or Motorola (or one of the others) the device you buy is pretty much all you get and upgrading means buying a new device. This model has been transferred to the tablet market as well. True, there are some hardware available with free aims such as OpenMoko’s freerunner but it hasn’t had the impact that it deserves or needs and it’s still a black box device."
